Winter Haven Hospital had a vision 20 years ago to develop the best rehabilitation center in Polk County. Today, the Joy-Fuller Rehabilitation Center is an integral part of Winter Haven Hospital. The 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility, located on the seventh floor of Winter Haven Hospital, provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary team approach to persons 18 years and older with activity limitations and participation restrictions related to brain injuries, strokes, hip and knee replacements, and other problems.

Through the years, our program has been committed to the hospital's mission of improving the health of the communities we serve by providing high quality, cost-effective healthcare services. Our outcome data for the fiscal year 2005-2006 reflects our commitment to serve our community. The Joy-Fuller Rehabilitation Center provided  rehabilitation services for 407 persons with diagnoses such as Amputation of Limb, Brain Injury, Cardiac Disorders, Neurological Conditions, Orthopedic Disorders, Total Joint Replacements, Spinal Cord Injury, and Stroke.

Upon discharge from the Joy-Fuller Rehabilitation Center, seventy percent of our patients achieved all their rehabilitation goals, and we were able to meet their rehabilitation needs with an average length of stay of 13 days. The interdisciplinary team provides intensive therapy an average of 3.3 hours per day per patient. These standards of quality and excellence are why the center was just reaccredited for the sixth time by CARF
(Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). The center’s most current recertification includes Brain Injury Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation, and for the first time, under brand new accreditation standards, Stroke Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation.

The interdisciplinary team develops an individualized plan of care to meet the needs and goals of the person served. The team focuses on patient recovery, success, and satisfaction of services. In fact, ninetyseven percent of our patients agreed or strongly agreed that they were satisfied with the overall process of care. The Joy-Fuller Rehabilitation Center goal for recovery is to empower the person, caregiver and family with education so they can achieve safe and successful transition to home, minimizing activity limitations, and maximizing understanding of the level of assistance needed for safe participation in the home and community.

Once discharged from the Joy-Fuller Rehabilitation Center, our services transcend into the outpatient neurological and orthopedic programs located at Winter Haven Hospital’s Gill Jones Campus. Providing a cohesive continuum of care is one of the many unique qualities that Winter Haven Hospital Rehabilitation Services has to offer. We are proud of our services because of the success of those transitioning to home. Eighty-seven  ercent of persons discharged from the Joy-Fuller Rehabilitation Center were discharged to their home or community of choice.

The history of the Joy-Fuller Rehabilitation Center began in 1987 with a very generous donation from the Eunice Fuller Family in 2000. Our legacy continues by being the only inpatient rehabilitation facility in Polk County. Outreach services are available in Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough, and Lake Counties.
